Become a Roots Fellow!

The Roots Fellowship Program is an unpaid 10-week, part-time or full-time program. Fellows will gain experience working with the social determinants of health from a variety of angles. Applicants should be committed to uplifting those impacted by systematic inequities and poverty in accordance with Roots’ mission. Empowerment Fellow

The Empowerment Fellow works with a variety of empowerment center staff including the Empowerment Center Coordinator, Barrier Removal Specialist, Policy & Public Affairs Manager, and Eligibility & Enrollment Specialist. Fellow may be involved in projects including assistance with facilitation of career/professionalism workshops, community event coordination, HeathyMeasures and Whole Person Care data analysis, and Medi-Cal and CalFresh related projects. The Fellow may take on a special project, such as coordinating a particular community event.

Communications Fellow

The Communications Fellow will be committed to the mission, vision and services
of Roots and able to communicate these in visual, verbal and written format to support the
communications department. This position works closely with the Policy & Public Affairs Manager,
and Communications Specialist to ensure consistency and accuracy of messaging that will broaden the
organization’s reach.

Policy & Public Affairs Fellow

The Policy & Public Affairs Fellow works with the Policy & Public Affairs Manager and Policy & Planning Specialist. The Fellow will assist with press releases, social media campaigns, newsletters, and outreach for community and fundraising events. The field of public affairs is research driven. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Excellent research skills–be able to report findings to the communications team, donor
    program, residency program, public policy research and various other projects.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of events with the communications team.
  • Be responsible for updating and expanding media logs, Constant Contact database.
  • Make outbound calls to support Roots’ Initiatives and support the Public Engagement,
    Content and Digital Communications Teams.
  • Assist the Policy & Public Affairs Manager with various projects and daily tasks.The Fellow may take on a special project relating to communication, such as writing a series of health-related blog posts.

Graphics Design & Video Production Fellow

The Graphic Design & Video Production Fellow will be committed to the mission, vision and services of Roots. Assist with generating and manipulating Roots’ graphic images, animations, sound, text and video into consolidated and seamless multimedia programs. Complete special projects to broaden the organization’s reach. This Fellow must already have skills in graphic design and the ability to work independently.
