Aisha Mays, MD

Aisha Mays, M.D. serves as the Director of Adolescent and School-Based Programs at Roots Community Health and founded Roots’ youth-led, youth-engaged adolescent clinics: Dream Youth Clinics.  Dr. Mays has worked with vulnerable youth in the Bay Area for over a decade and has specific clinical, teaching, and research expertise on youth affected by sex trafficking.  Among her many leadership roles, she has served as a Co-Principal Investigator for Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health/UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, a Clinical Lead for the UCSF Dept. of Family and Community Medicine, and as medical director for both Alameda County’s Juvenile Justice Medical Clinic, and San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Community Health Programs for Youth. 

Prior to joining Roots Dr. Mays practiced medicine in various community settings, including at La Clinica De La Raza, the Native American Health Center, Children’s Hospital Oakland, and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.  Dr. Mays received her B.S. in Biology from Clark Atlanta University, her MD from Case Western Reserve and completed her Family Medicine training at the Residency Program in Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center.  Dr. Mays is passionate about training medical professionals throughout the country on the health impacts of childhood commercial sexual exploitation and believes that creativity, critical inquiry and community building are keys to constructing a new, equitable vision for healthcare.
